Solar and battery rebates, explained

Rebates, battery sizes and quotes can feel like a different language. Here is how it all fits together for a Queensland home, without the jargon.

How the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program works

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal scheme that lowers the upfront cost of a home battery. It works through small-scale technology certificates. In practice that means your installer applies the discount on your quote, so you are not filling in forms or waiting on a payment later.

To qualify, the battery has to be an approved model and the installer has to be accredited. The battery is normally installed with solar, either a system you already have or one fitted at the same time. The amount depends on the usable size of the battery, and it can step down for larger batteries and change over time. That is why the exact figure always comes from your installer's written quote and the official program rules, not from a website headline.

How battery sizing works

A good battery is sized around your evenings and nights, not your roof. The question is simple: how much power does your home use once the sun has gone down? Air conditioning, cooking, lights, the pool pump and the TV all add up between about 5pm and 7am.

Your power bill shows your total use and, on many bills, a split between daytime and the rest. From that we estimate your overnight use, add a margin so the battery is not run flat every night, and round up to the nearest standard size. A bigger battery is not always better. One that never fills, or never empties, is money sitting idle. That is what the calculator and the bill check on this site show, using your own numbers.

What to check in a quote

  • Approved battery. The exact make and model should be written on the quote and be on the approved list.
  • Accredited installer. Ask who will do the work and whether they are accredited for batteries.
  • Sizes in writing. Solar in kW, battery in usable kWh, and the inverter size.
  • How the rebate is applied. It should be shown as a separate line, so you can see what it does.
  • Warranty. Years, what is covered, and who you call if something goes wrong.
  • Backup power. Whether the battery runs the house in a blackout, and which circuits it covers.
  • What is left out. Switchboard upgrades, meter changes and extra cabling can sit outside a short quote.

Comparing two quotes? Make sure they describe the same size and the same equipment before you compare anything else.

Sigenergy, Sungrow and GoodWe

Sigenergy, Sungrow and GoodWe are three battery and inverter brands that installers in Australia commonly quote. They differ in things that matter at home: whether they suit single-phase or three-phase supply, how they behave in a blackout, how far the battery can be expanded later, and the warranty terms. We do not rank brands here. The right one depends on your roof, your switchboard and the way you use power, and we will talk you through the options for your home.

Suburbs we cover

We work across South-East Queensland, including Brisbane and its suburbs, the Gold Coast (Southport, Robina, Burleigh, Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang and Upper Coomera), Logan, Ipswich and Springfield, Moreton Bay and Redcliffe, the Redlands, the Sunshine Coast and the Scenic Rim. We also cover Northern NSW. Enter your postcode in the form above and we will confirm we can help.

Questions

Common questions

Is it worth getting solar or a battery?

It depends on your home. Solar suits homes that use a lot of power in the day. A battery suits homes that use most power at night. Your power bill and roof show which one fits, so we start there. If it does not stack up for your home, we will say so.

How does the battery rebate work?

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes some money off the upfront cost of an eligible home battery. The battery and the installer both need to be approved, and what you get depends on the battery you choose. The installer usually takes it off your quote, so you do not chase it yourself. We explain how it applies to your home before you decide anything.

Do I need solar panels to get the battery rebate?

Batteries under the program are normally installed together with a solar system, either one you already have or one installed at the same time. If you do not have solar yet, we can look at both together. The installer confirms the exact rules for your home on the quote.

How big a battery does my home need?

It comes down to how much power you use after the sun goes down. We look at your bill, work out your evening and overnight use, then add a margin and round up to the nearest standard battery size. The calculator and the bill check on this site do exactly that, and show the result in plain numbers you can check against your own bill.

What should I check before I accept a quote?

Check that the battery model is on the approved list, that the installer is accredited, that the solar and battery sizes are written down, that the inverter and warranty details are listed, and that the quote shows how the rebate has been applied. If anything is vague, ask for it in writing. We can line two quotes up side by side for you.

Which battery brands do you work with?

Brands such as Sigenergy, Sungrow and GoodWe are commonly quoted in Australia. The right choice depends on your home, your inverter, and whether you have single-phase or three-phase power. We explain the trade-offs in plain words and do not push one brand.

Which suburbs do you cover?

We focus on South-East Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redland, the Sunshine Coast and the Scenic Rim, and also Northern NSW. Our installer partner is based at Upper Coomera. Enter your postcode in the form and we will confirm.

Who does the install?

A licensed local installer partner, Industry Solar, based at Upper Coomera. They install and look after the system. Solar Rebates Queensland does not install anything.

What happens after I enquire?

A team member checks your details and calls you on the mobile you gave us. They ask a few questions and explain your options in plain words. If you want a quote, a site visit is booked. If not, that is fine.

Do I have to buy anything?

No. Enquiring is not a commitment.
